How to Use
On iPhone or iPad
Winmail Viewer works directly from the standard iOS Share sheet.
- Open the email containing the
Winmail.dat,.msg, or.xpsattachment. - Tap and hold the attachment icon, then choose Share.
- Select Winmail Viewer from the app list.
- The app will launch and display the extracted contents.
From the Files App
- Browse to your file in the Files app.
- Tap the file to open the preview, then tap the Share icon (box with arrow).
- Choose Winmail Viewer to open the document.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Winmail.dat file?
These are special attachments created by Microsoft Outlook when emails are sent in Rich Text Format. They encapsulate the message text, fonts, and original attachments in a format (TNEF) that many non-Outlook mail clients cannot read natively.
Which file types are supported?
The app supports decoding and viewing:

Why can't I see the app in the Share list?
If you don't see Winmail Viewer in the row of app icons:
- Scroll to the far right of the app row and tap More (...).
- Tap Edit in the top right corner.
- Find Winmail Viewer in the list and toggle the switch to ON, or tap the green plus icon.
- Tap Done. It will now appear in your sharing options.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter an error when opening a file:
- Check the download: Ensure the file has fully downloaded in Mail before trying to share it.
- Original File: Make sure you are sharing the actual file object, not a screenshot or a link to the file.
- Restart: Close Winmail Viewer from the app switcher and try the import action again.
