File Format Introduction

What is a PST file?

PST (Personal Storage Table) is a Microsoft Outlook data file format. It can contain emails, folders, attachments, contacts, and calendar items from Outlook.

What is an MBOX file?

MBOX is a mailbox format used by many email clients. It stores messages in a portable plain-text structure and is commonly used for migration, backup, and import.

Tutorial: Convert PST to MBOX

  1. Open PST to MBOX on your Mac.
  2. Click Open... and select your .pst (or .ost) file.
  3. Wait for folders and messages to load.
  4. Select the folder or messages you want to export.
  5. Choose Export and select output format MBOX (or EML if needed).
  6. Choose a destination folder and start the export.
  7. After completion, verify the generated .mbox files in Finder.

After Conversion: How to Use MBOX

Apple Mail

  1. Open Apple Mail.
  2. Go to File → Import Mailboxes....
  3. Select Files in mbox format.
  4. Choose your converted .mbox file/folder and import.

Mozilla Thunderbird

  1. Open Thunderbird.
  2. Use the import feature to import mailbox data from a file.
  3. Select your converted .mbox files.
